Psycho-what?

Therapy. Mental health counseling. Psychotherapy. What’s the difference?

❋ Different words, different views.

Some use these words interchangeably to describe any kind of “talk therapy” that helps people address their mental health challenges.

Others make distinctions based on the kind of work they're describing. Counseling is sometimes associated with practical problem-solving and specific goals, while psychotherapy often brings to mind a more exploratory process that examines the deeper patterns and experiences shaping our lives.

In reality, these approaches can overlap considerably. Licensed Professional Counselors are trained to work in both ways.

❋ Depth-oriented psychotherapy is . . . well . . . deeper.

For me, “depth-oriented psychotherapy” best conveys what I do. I help folks explore the complexities of their individual and relationship challenges by looking under the surface at the many layers that contribute to and influence who they are and how they relate to the world.

I operate with a “psychodynamic” lens. Put simply, this means I believe our earliest relationships have a profound impact on what we first learn to believe about ourselves and others. Over time, life gives us opportunities to reconsider that first education, along with a chance to really see and interact with our default ways of being in new and fulfilling ways.
